Finding a tech identity

With the rise of Monzo, Revolut, and other Fintech challenger brands, the perception of Barclays was that of a legacy bank. Both potential and current employees needed affirmation that Barclays were working with the cutting-edge tech vital in today’s money market. Our brief was to come up with proposition that placed Barclays as a tech leader. With eight messaging pillars to straddle and a relatively recent visual refresh, there was potential to over-complicate things. But really what Barclays wanted to say was simple: It’s Happening Here.

The cornerstone of the Barclays visual identity is the thick Portal around the edge. We gave it new life for tech audiences by using abstract, computer-generated imagery as a texture. This treatment gave each piece of artwork a unique, tactile feel. The approach also lent itself perfectly to motion design. Below are some content pieces we did in support of the Barclays Tech podcast, where the textured portals really came into their own.

The Loop
podcast

In line with the tech campaign, the creative for the podcast was designed to cut through the stereotypes around working in banking.

The podcast has been featured in the top weekly charts of tech podcasts in the UK on Spotify and Apple six times — it retained the #9 position for two weeks back in July 2023 when we were promoting Season 1, Episode 4, “Empowering Through Tech”.

One of the best things about this piece of work was getting to know and work with so many different people. Whether working with colleagues in New York to help bring my vision of the website to life, or being mystified in multiple Sanofi offices globally by people who knew their way around a molecule or two. Digging into those people’s experiences and focussing every touchpoint around them made this a really memorable project to work on.
